The Best Degreaser Spray For Cleaning Up Greasy Messes

Bacon is a favorite at our house, and it’s what inspired me to start searching for the best degreaser spray in the first place. My stove at home has a cast iron griddle built into the center, and while it’s great for cooking bacon, the process tends to make a greasy mess of my stovetop.

I knew I needed a grease cutting cleaner that would pack a punch, so I did some research to see what I could find. Luckily, I eventually came up with a great formula for a homemade degreaser spray powered by grease-fighting citrus!

This homemade citrus degreaser is best made in a dark spray bottle to protect the lemon essential oil from light.

What’s In This Citrus Degreaser Spray?

The formula for this spray couldn’t be simpler, and it starts with arguably one of the best grease-cutting cleaners you can keep on hand: lemon essential oil. A compound called limonene gives lemon oil its grease-cutting power.

Once you combine lemon oil with a bit of baking soda and Castile soap for added cleaning power, you’ll end up with the best degreaser spray around! Greasy kitchen messes won’t know what hit them.

  2. The best and least messy way to cook bacon is on a cookie sheet (with sides) lined with parchment paper in the oven at 350 degrees. I cut the bacon strips in half before placing them on the parchment paper. No splatters and the bacon stays flat. Best way ever.

    • I suppose it could, but I wouldn’t want to spray lemon oil on clothes unless I was washing them right after. I would try this instead: http://bit.ly/2QEX4c3 :-)

  6. That last photo with the pretty towel – where did you get that? I saw it once, several years ago but was unable to find the source and it is still a ig eye catcher and beautiful and I would love to get one for my daughter. Love the recipe since I have smoke/grease stains on my ceiling way up high (14′) and when I had my cataracts removed, saw it – was amazed at the dirt just in that area due to the grease from cooking. I think your recipe would be great to try on a long handled sponge to wipe down my out of reach wall/ceiling.

    • You can warm up the water in the microwave, and mix in the baking soda. Stir it well, and the baking soda should dissolve completely! Then you can add the rest of the ingredients :-)

  12. My new strategy for cleaning up greasing kitchen surfaces, is to wipe everything down with paper towels first. A lot of the gunk comes up that way and then I hit it with a cleaning solution. This keeps my sponges from getting really grody. You can also buy d-limonene in the gallon size direct from the maker in Florida. I use full strength to take labels off of jars, to clean paint brushes and to attack really bad grease. Diluted I use it in my cleaning solutions.
Donna, I don’t think you have to worry about using limonene in your cleaning solutions if you have cats. They’re not going to ingest it and any minut amounts in the residue can be wiped off with a paper towels since it is an oil base. And lemon juice is not a substitute because it doesn’t contain the limonene which is extracted from the peel.

    • Thanks so much for the information about buying d-limonene from Florida! I checked it out and am going to order the quart size that sells for $30. The description for using sounds great so am hoping it works as well as they say.

    • Yes! Thank you for the info about d-limonene. Makes so much sense, I never thought to buy full strength. What is your recipe for an everyday cleaner using d-limonene?

      • Wendy, I I’m sorry, but I don’t have one. I guess I should work one out. I typically use it straight-out of a squeeze bottle into a paper towel and use it that way. And then use detergent such as Dawn, for the final cleanup. It occurs to me we might look at the manufacturer’s website to see if they have any recipes there. For the record, I’ve been buying Orange terpenes, from Greenterpene.com.
        They have many products.

  13. Great and easy idea, but can real lemon juice be substituted for the essential oil, and if so, how much? Although I love essential oils, I do not use them because I have cats, and their systems cannot tolerate the use of most oils, so I have eliminated using all of them.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
    • Sure! It won’t work quite as well, but the lemon juice will still help cut through the grease. 1/4 cup of lemon juice should do the trick. :-) Although you might want to store it in the fridge.

  14. Hi! I love this idea! Do you have to use a glass bottle because of the essential oils?

Please log in or create a free account to comment.
    • Yes, glass is best when it comes to storing essential oils :-)

      • Will you please provide a link to the ones that you use? Thank you!

      • Thank you!

  15. Thank you so much for this! I have been wanting something to clean greasy messes, but didn’t want to buy something at the store!

  16. Can the Castille soap be substituted out for another soap? I don’t have it and wondered if something else could work instead of having to buy it? Thank you!!

    • I’m going to try dawn dish detergent in place of the Castile soap.

      • That will work, Barbara! :-)

    • I was also wondering about that. I think I may try it with blue Dawn and see how it works.

    • You can use any soap you like, but castile is best for this recipe!
