Silicone is an extremely versatile material, and these days it is used to make everything from wedding rings to baby bibs. But one of my personal favorite types of silicone products is silicone molds! They come in a hundred different shapes, sizes, and styles, and there are so many ways to use them.
And that’s exactly what we’ll be talking about today! I’ll be sharing a list of 7 of the most clever and useful things you can do with silicone molds. And if you have an idea that isn’t included here, I’d love to hear about it! Share your idea in a comment at the bottom of this post, and we swap ideas there! :-)
7 Brilliant Ways To Use A Silicone Mold
1. Lunch/Snack Tray
I’ve always been a snacker, and sometimes my lunches look more like a variety of snacks than an actual meal! But silicone molds are perfect for serving up a snack-style lunch.
Fill each cavity in your silicone mold with things like nuts, grapes, cubes of cheese, cured meats, pretzels, etc. Then enjoy your pick-and-choose lunch adventure!
2. Food Prep
Prepping all of your ingredients before you start cooking can make the process much easier. But instead of putting those ingredients in a bunch of separate bowls, just use a silicone mold instead! Then you’ll only have one extra item to clean up after dinner.
3. Freeze Leftover Ingredients
You know those ingredients that buy to use in a recipe, but you only end up using part of them? If you’re anything like me, those ingredients get put in the fridge, forgotten about, then thrown away a few weeks later.
Instead, put those unused portions of ingredients in the cavity of a silicone mold and freeze them. They’ll last much longer in the freezer, meaning you can actually get around to using them up!
4. Make Spinach Cubes
Love your morning smoothie? Give it a boost of extra vitamins and minerals by adding a few spinach cubes! To make spinach cubes, blend up some spinach (or your favorite greens) with a bit of water and pour the mixture into a silicone mold.
Freeze the cubes until solid, then transfer them to a freezer bag. When you’re ready to make a smoothie, just grab a few of your frozen spinach cubes and toss them into the blender cup.
5. Make DIY Bath & Beauty Products
My favorite way to use silicone molds at home is to make my own bath and beauty products! They’re great for making all sorts of homemade creations. Check out some of my past DIYs that include the use of a silicone mold by visiting the links below!

7. Corral Small Items
It drives me crazy to open a drawer and see a bunch of small items rolling around inside. That’s where a silicone mold can really come in handy! The tacky silicone will stay put inside the drawer, and you can use the cavities to keep small items organized and easy to find.
Do you know of any other brilliant uses for silicone molds?
I know you can freeze cream. Has anyone used the frozen, thawed cream to make ice cream? My (Cuisinart) recipe makes one quart and uses one and a half cups of cream. I don’t want to waste that extra half cup. I have saved it in the original container in the coldest part of the fridge until I have 3 of them and then used it in the ice cream satisfactorly. It’s usually 9 days between batches. The dates on cream are quite long , but I’d just as soon have it out in the big freezer instead of taking up space in the fridge. I know I could just try it, but don’t want to ruin a batch, if it doesn’t work.
My hint: I store the ice cream in a 6×6 air tight container. When it’s frozen, I score the top into 9 pieces so I know how much to put with DH’s dessert. I use a spoon to dish up as it’s easier than using a scoop, especially after that first portion is out. He says it’s the best vanilla ice cream he’s ever had.

Every time I’ve tried to bake in them, the cake absolutely refuses to release and I end up with crumbs. Even greasing the pan before pouring in the batter doesn’t help. How are these tube cake pans supposed to be used?

Please log in or create a free account to comment. How are you washing them? I don’t have one but I would guess washing by hand with a mild dish washing liquid would be better than putting them in the dishwasher with that type of harsher detergent. It may be stripping the ‘finish’, for want of a better word, off the silicone.

I use them for portioning tomato paste, or coconut cream – – or many other ingredients that come in large containers but I only need a little at a time. Once they freeze solid I pop them out and put them in a freezer bag for use as needed.

Once frozen, I pop out the cubes and store in a freezer bag. When I need chicken broth, just drop a cube in some water and microwave until melted. Use it for mashed potatoes, rice, dog/cat food, etc.
