When I stop and consider all the ways I’ve used OxiClean in my home over the years, the more I wonder how I ever lived without it! Today, the OxiClean brand covers a range of household cleaning products, from dishwasher boosters to carpet cleaners.
Even so, it’s hard to beat their original OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover! This powder can be used as a laundry booster, stain remover, and household cleaner, and it features ingredients like sodium carbonate (AKA washing soda) and hydrogen peroxide that break down safely with no toxic byproducts.
In this post, I’m sharing 11 of my favorite household uses for OxiClean that cover cleaning, laundry, and more. But before we dive in, let’s take a quick look at a few of the different OxiClean formats and preparations that are most useful for household cleaning.

4 OxiClean Formats & Solutions To Know
I refer to four different methods for preparing and using OxiClean throughout this post. I’ve included the preferred option for each tip in italicized text, but I’ll explain those options here.
Here’s a brief overview of the formats that are mentioned throughout this post:
- Powder – Use OxiClean in its original powdered form.
- Paste – Create a paste by stirring 1 tablespoon of water into 1 tablespoon of OxiClean powder.
- Soak – Make a soaking solution by adding 1/4 cup of OxiClean per gallon of water used.
- Cleaning Solution – Create a cleaning solution by stirring 1 tablespoon of OxiClean into 1 cup of warm water until the powder is fully dissolved. Pour the solution into a squeeze bottle for use. (Note: Avoid spray bottles, as oxygen bleach solutions produce carbon dioxide gas that will build up in a sealed container.)
11 Excellent Household Uses For OxiClean

1. Clean Bathroom Sinks
Format: Paste
The bathroom sink can get quite grimy over time, resulting in discoloration around the drain and overflow hole. Use an OxiClean paste to scrub all that grime away quickly and easily!
Simply apply the paste to your sink, let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub it with an old toothbrush. Afterward, give your sink a good rinse and polish the fixtures with a microfiber cloth.

2. Remove Stickers & Labels
Format: Soak
To remove adhesive residue, stickers, and stubborn labels, first prepare an OxiClean soak in your sink. Submerge the container(s) you want to clean in the water and let them soak for an hour or so.
After an hour, the labels and/or stickers should be falling right off! If there is any remaining residue clinging to the container, use a sponge to wipe it off.

3. Clean Outdoor Items
Format: Cleaning solution
You can use a simple OxiClean solution to clean a variety of outdoor items. I’ve used it to clean my birdbaths, patio furniture, and even the carpeting in my husband’s fishing boat — just apply, scrub, and rinse!

4. Clean Your Range Hood Filter
Format: Soak
If you haven’t cleaned it recently, the filter inside your range hood is likely chock full of grease and grime! The easiest way to clean it is using an OxiClean soak, either in your kitchen sink or your deepest cooking pot.
Soak the filter in the OxiClean for 30 minutes or so (flipping if necessary to soak the exposed part of the filter), then rinse clean. Let the filter air dry for several hours or overnight before replacing it.

5. Treat Carpet Stains
Format: Cleaning solution
You can use an OxiClean spray to spot clean spills or pet stains on your carpeting! Blot the area with a clean, dry cloth to remove as much of the stain as possible, then saturate the stain with the solution.
Blot the area again with another clean cloth, and repeat as necessary until the stain disappears. Rinse the spot with clean water afterward.

6. Brighten Grout Lines
Format: Paste
A simple paste of OxiClean and water can make your kitchen grout look like new again! Use an old toothbrush or small cleaning brush to apply the paste to grimy grout lines.
Give the paste a quick scrub, then let it sit for about 10 minutes. When you’re done, wipe the area clean with a damp cloth.

7. Clean & Deodorize Garbage Bins
Format: Soak
Both indoor and outdoor garbage bins can get dirty and smelly over time. To clean and freshen it, prepare an OxiClean soak in a bucket and bring it over to your garbage bins.
Dip a cloth or scrub brush into the soak and use it to clean your garbage bins inside and out. Rinse it clean with a hose or in your tub, then allow the bin to air dry completely before using.

8. Whiten Canvas Shoes
Format: Soak
Restore your dingy white Keds to their former glory with an OxiClean soak! Prepare the soak in a bucket or sink, then soak your shoes in it for 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the soil level.
After soaking, scrub the shoes with a stiff brush to remove the loosened dirt. Rinse well in clean water, then let the shoes air dry for several hours before wearing.

9. Make Your Own Laundry Detergent
Format: Powder
OxiClean is one of the powerhouse cleaning ingredients that makes my homemade laundry detergent so effective! Its stain-fighting and brightening power helps give every load of laundry an extra boost of freshness.

10. Clean Your Shower Curtain Liner
Format: Powder
We’ve all run across the issue of nasty buildup on a shower curtain liner. But luckily for us, OxiClean makes it easy to get rid of all that soap scum, mildew, and even that gross orange mystery gunk!
Toss the shower curtain liner in your washing machine, along with one or two bath towels to help protect it. Add a scoop of OxiClean to the washer, then wash on a delicate setting with cool water. Rehang in shower to dry.

11. Hand Wash Delicates & Accessories
Format: Soak
Accessories like baseball hats and delicate clothing can wind up warped or damaged if you try to clean them in your washing machine. But with the help of an OxiClean soak and a bit of elbow grease, you can clean them safely so they look brand new!

Please log in or create a free account to comment.Since it breaks down in water, I don’t think it would work in the liquid detergent. Just throw a scoop of powder in with your laundry instead.

I used 2 cups of OxyClean in a bathtub full of warm water to soak a previously worn wedding dress that had been a tad too long so the very bottom was blackened with dirt. I left it to soak overnight and in the morning there was a black ring around the tub and the dress was pristine.

The best floor grout cleaner I have ever used is Resolve Carpet Cleaner (let it sit a few minutes) and a toothbrush.

Please log in or create a free account to comment.I agree that using hot water makes it dissolve and work more effectively. Also, if you make the spray, plan to use it all at once as it does not keep to work well.
Please log in or create a free account to comment.Cool tips. I use oxi clean occasionally for tough stains . I only have it in the bottle- unless someone else at home has the powdered form. It really does work great with tough stains. I like it because most prewash sprays only remove certain stains-so in the past I had to have another formula for the other types stains.
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I did actually find some of the powder formula in our house. I was telling my mom about this column today. We bought it way before the virus hit. So hopefully it won’t be a problem to locate more if we like it.

I use a dishwashing tub placed on a layer of folded towels in my bathtub to do this. Not just for fresh stains, works on older stains as well.
Please log in or create a free account to comment.I have used powder bleach for years, originally Amway’s as it does not harm the environment. I have a conservatory that faces north and has a polycarbonate roof which is impossible to reach to clean thoroughly and I have found after clearing any moss from it I fill a very large jug with very hot water and some powder bleach and throw it onto the roof from my bedroom windows. It doesn’t get rinsed and I repeat the following day if needed, it cleans it beautifully and stays clean longer than my neighbouyr’s conservatory roof does.
